Hallowed Bones by Lucy Smoke Review: Witches, Wicked Men & a Sinfully Slow-Burn Why Choose Romance
Hallowed Bones by Lucy Smoke | Sons of Salem Book 1 | A ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Gothic Paranormal Why Choose Romance Review Filled with Witchcraft, Cursed Bloodlines, Haunted Halls & Four Dangerous Men
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 STARS | THE QUEEN HAS SPOKEN 👑🖤
DEAR SINNERS, SOMEONE CALL AN EXORCIST. AND POSSIBLY MY THERAPIST.
Before we discuss the witchcraft, the dangerously complicated men, or the absolutely disrespectful amount of romantic tension in this book, I need to issue a warning.
DO. NOT. READ. THIS. SHIT. AT. NIGHT.
Especially if you're one of those people who needs their closet door shut before going to sleep.
You know who you are.
The ones who hear a floorboard creak at 2 AM and immediately start mentally dividing their belongings between their surviving family members.
Because apparently, Hallowed Bones by Lucy Smoke isn't satisfied with haunting my thoughts. Oh no. This book has me side-eyeing dark corners of my bedroom like something from the Salem witch trials crawled out of hell and decided to become my roommate.
AND I AM A GROWN-ASS WOMAN.
I pay bills. I raise children. I have responsibilities.
Yet here I am, contemplating whether the monster under my bed would accept a peace offering of chocolate and an agreement to leave me the fuck alone.
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE‽ 😭
And why did I enjoy every damn minute of it?

Forget your typical college experience.
There's no charming little campus tour, no reassuring orientation speech, and certainly no comforting promise that your biggest concern will be passing your exams.
Nope.
Welcome to Ipswich College, where ghosts apparently wander the hallways like they have tenure, ancient family secrets are practically part of the curriculum, and something sinister seems to be lurking just beyond what anyone is willing to explain.
Honestly, somebody needs to update the college brochure.
Five families accused of witchcraft.
Generations of secrets.
Cursed bloodlines.
Gods with their own agendas.
And a supernatural history that makes your average family feud look like an argument over who forgot to bring potato salad to Thanksgiving.
I LOVE THIS SHIT.
The atmosphere is dark, seductive, and deliciously unsettling. That creeping suspicion that something is watching? That the shadows might actually contain something with teeth?
Yeah. That.
It's the kind of paranormal mystery that makes me want to investigate everything while simultaneously reminding myself that curiosity gets people killed in horror movies.
And I am NOT volunteering as tribute. .~
Now...
Let's discuss the Sons of Salem.
Ezra Bishop.
Cameron Goode.
Lyall Corey.
Reyes Scott.
Four men.
Four complicated legacies.
Enough secrets to make a government intelligence agency nervous.
And apparently, four more reasons for me to question why fictional men with emotional baggage are my preferred recreational activity.
Because let's be clear.
These are not the sunshine-and-roses, hold-your-hand-and-bring-you-flowers kind of men.
These are the something is deeply wrong here, and I'm disturbingly interested in finding out what kind.
The ones whose warning labels probably require their own table of contents.
Broken? Possibly.
Dangerous? They certainly give that impression.
Interesting?
FUCK YES.
And then there's our girl...
Haven Wardwell.
Oh, Haven.
You magnificent little menace.
Here's a woman who finds herself surrounded by witchcraft, ancient legacies, supernatural danger, and four men whose existence practically screams proceed with caution.
And does she respond with delicate little gasps and the personality of a frightened houseplant?
ABSOLUTELY NOT.
She's funny.
She's sharp.
She's got that wonderfully inappropriate sense of humor that makes me want to pull up a chair, pour a drink, and watch the chaos unfold.
One of my favorite things about this book is how Haven's humor cuts through the darkness.
Because sometimes, when the world is falling apart and supernatural bullshit is knocking at your door, the only reasonable response is sarcasm.
My personal favorite kind of survival mechanism.
And can we appreciate this exchange?
"I do not howl at the moon," he states.
"Do you bark?"
I'M SORRY. 😭
Imagine being surrounded by supernatural mystery and still finding the time to question a man's canine tendencies.
Haven, sweetheart, NEVER CHANGE.
Now we need to discuss something that deserves its own formal complaint.
THE ROMANCE.
Or, more accurately...
Sinners.
When I say slow burn, I don't mean the cute kind where they exchange meaningful glances for three chapters before somebody finally loses their pants.
No.
I mean this romance is moving so slowly that a snail could get married, have children, survive a midlife crisis, and retire somewhere in Florida before the romantic tension decides to clock in for work.
🐌
I'm sitting here with my imaginary popcorn, collecting crumbs of romantic development like some desperate Victorian orphan.
And Lucy Smoke is somewhere in the literary universe laughing at my suffering.
THE AUDACITY.
I came for witchcraft and dangerous men.
I stayed for the mystery.
But somewhere along the way, I became emotionally invested in a romantic situation that apparently operates on geological time.
And the worst part?
IT FUCKING WORKS.
UGH.
Because this isn't a story that needs to throw everyone into bed immediately to hold my attention.
The secrets matter.
The connections matter.
The history matters.
And that delicious, maddening anticipation becomes part of the experience.
This is a dark why choose romance, but anyone expecting four men to start handing out orgasms like Halloween candy right out of the gate needs to recalibrate their expectations.
Seriously.
Pack snacks.
Bring patience.
Possibly update your retirement plan.
We're going to be here awhile.
GHOSTS, GODS & THE BEAUTIFUL DISASTER OF BEING BROKEN. 🔮
Underneath the witchcraft and supernatural suspense, there's something else that hooked me.
The idea of broken people recognizing brokenness in others.
Not necessarily fixing it.
Not magically erasing every ugly thing that's happened.
Just recognizing it.
There's something haunting about that.
Because sometimes the people who understand our darkness aren't the ones standing safely in the sunlight.
Sometimes they're the ones who've spent so long living in their own shadows that they recognize yours without needing an explanation.
And that little emotional undercurrent?
THAT'S MY WEAKNESS.
Give me morally complicated characters. Give me messy connections. Give me people who aren't easily separated into good and evil.
I don't need perfect characters.
Perfect is boring.
I want the ones carrying histories they'd rather bury.
The ones whose secrets have secrets.
The ones who make me laugh one minute and question my emotional well-being the next.
And this story has enough darkness, mystery, and intriguing character dynamics to keep me thoroughly invested.
The witchcraft isn't just window dressing.
The legacies aren't simply decorative family names.
There's a sense that everything is connected, that the past is reaching into the present, and that Haven has stepped into something far more dangerous than she realizes.
And with the Gods involved?
Oh, honey.
I'm sure everything will be perfectly reasonable and nobody will suffer.
BAHAHAHAHA.
Yeah, right. ꩜

THE QUEEN'S VERDICT: FIVE STARS & ABSOLUTELY NO SLEEP. 👑
Let's review the damage.
Did Hallowed Bones give me the gothic, witchy atmosphere I wanted?
YES.
Did it introduce four complicated fictional men whose secrets have me suspicious of absolutely everyone?
ALSO YES.
Did Haven make me laugh when I probably should've been concerned for her safety?
MULTIPLE TIMES.
Did the romance move at the speed of a dying snail dragging a coffin uphill?
ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY.
And did I still give this book five stars?
You're damn right I did.
Because Lucy Smoke managed to combine paranormal mystery, unsettling gothic atmosphere, ancient witchcraft, dark humor, and tantalizing romantic tension into a story that left me thoroughly entertained.
I wanted answers.
I wanted more of Haven.
I wanted to know what the hell was happening with those men.
And, for the love of all things sinful, I wanted the romantic slow burn to pick up its goddamn feet.
But I loved the ride.
This is exactly the kind of series opener that makes you realize you've willingly signed up for another round of fictional emotional damage.
And apparently, I never learn.
FINAL SENTENCE BEFORE I CHECK MY CLOSET...
If you love witches, ghosts, cursed bloodlines, secret societies, morally complicated men, sarcastic heroines, and a romance that takes approximately seventeen business centuries to simmer...
PUT HALLOWED BONES ON YOUR TBR.
But if you're afraid of monsters beneath your bed?
Read it during daylight.
With witnesses.
And perhaps a priest on speed dial.
Because I refuse to be responsible for whatever comes crawling out of your closet tonight. 😈
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | FIVE BLOODY STARS
Lucy Smoke, you've earned every single one.
But I expect compensation for the sleep I've lost and the emotional distress caused by this snail-paced romance.
Preferably in the form of more Sons of Salem.
Immediately.
With love, lust, literary chaos, and every damn light in the house turned on,
Ruling the Darkest Desires, One Page at a Time.
❦ Bookish Sinners, Your Turn!
Tell me in the comments:
Are you a slow-burn masochist who loves the torture, or do you need those fictional men to GET TO THE DAMN KISSING ALREADY‽ 🐌🔥
And more importantly...
Would you read a haunted paranormal romance alone at midnight with your closet door open?
Because some of y'all are entirely too brave for your own good.
